Last week I started reading The Kite Runner with my seniors. It's an amazing book, and they really enjoy it once they get into it. The problem is getting them into it - kids have been conditioned to think that if a book is long it's too hard. If it's hard, they don't want to do it. In addition to telling them how much they are going to like it, I’ve been giving “reading check” quizzes to keep them honest in their reading. As in, doing their readings...
This morning, one of the questions was, “Which character has a German mother, an Afghani father, blonde hair and blue eyes?”
The answer is Assef.
S, one of my quietest kids, says, unintentionally out loud to the whole class, “THAT’S it!! All I could remember was the ‘ass’ part.”
I know you’re not supposed to laugh, but we almost cried we laughed so hard…the look on his face when he realized he said it out loud was priceless!
