Don't judge a book by its cover

Sometimes teenagers can be so self-centered and so self-absorbed that I'm amazed. They can't see beyond their own wants and desires to what anyone else needs.

But that's rare.

More often, I am amazed at how insightful and thought-provoking and incredibly sensitive they are. They are kind, and funny, and caring.

As an English teacher, I think I get to see this kind and caring side of them more than most other adults they come into contact with. I get to read journal entries and have great theme based discussions with them. It's one of the perks of my job. It helps offset the incredible amount of time I spend grading essays and other work.

Every now and again, when I'm reading what they've written, I come across a gem that makes me stop and take notice.

Like these words of A's - "You should never judge somebody before you get to know them. You never know: they could become your favorite hello and your hardest goodbye."

Rock on, A, I couldn't have said it better myself.
